This Dove Real Beauty video is an example of a viral video with intention to encourage women to see advertisements with a more critical eye. With an increase in social comparison through the media and websites like Facebook, body image concern is a growing issue. A few campaigns such as the ones started by popular brands Dove and Aerie are attempting to remind girls that natural is beautiful and the Thin Ideal is not something to obsess over. Aerie uses the hashtag #AerieReal and have stopped retouching their models to show every body type and imperfection. Their website also offers the option to view images of their bras on models that are the same size as you. The Dove Campaign for real beauty conducts research on body image and dissatisfaction for women of all ages and makes promotional videos that are viral sensations. While these two examples are steps in the right direction these campaigns are unfortunately unique and few and far between.
