Tumblr: Websites such as Tumblr also can negatively affect body image by spreading a Thin Ideal image and pro eating disorder conversations. Tumblr is an easy place to see these “pro ana” and “pro mia” attitudes. A simple search of “thigh gap” turns up thousands of images that people share to encourage the Thin Ideal. A few examples are posted below. By circulating this image, you are encouraging negative body image and striving for unattainable “perfection”. This practice has an adverse affect that only harms you more. Recently Tumblr has realized that they can help to deter this behavior by posting a PSA when people search for eating disorder terms. They also link to the National Eating Disorders Association’s (NEDA) Tumblr page which is filled with positive and inspirational quotes and tidbits.
